A NEWPORT couple who met in 1956 within the some distance East have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

John and Margaret Smith met when John become serving with the Royal Navy and Margaret's father became the bosun of the dockyard in Hong Kong.

The couple married at St Woolos Cathedral, Newport, on March 18, 1961.

John, 85, a plumber and gas engineer by trade, become born in Birmingham and joined the Royal Navy aged 17 as a stoker. He turned into serving on HMS Tamar when he met his future wife in Kowloon.
